Grey nurse shark injured by fishing hooks, Fish Rock, Australia
It has been illegal to fish grey nurse sharks since 1984, but they are still subject to injuries from fishing hooks, even if they are not the targeted species.
In the early 2000s, the autopsy of a dead grey nurse shark revealed the cause was multiple recreational fishing hooks, found in its stomach.
One way to protect grey nurse sharks from such harm would be to avoid line-fishing nearby known aggregation sites.
