This yellowtail scad has had a long, painful, crual death: while still alive, it was pierced with two fishing hooks and thrown back in the water as live bait.
The panicked creature will then swim franctically, which is thought to be an efficient way to attract and catch bigger fish.
When we found this fish, it had wrapped its line around the reef, including this pink sponge. The tense line was sawing through the sponge and causing further damage, so I resolved to cut it. Yet, it was too late for the fish, already dead.
